Student Civic Engagement Debathon in Valencia, Spain
This month, an EU-CONEXUS Student Civic Engagement Debathon took place in Valencia, hosted by Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir. The event gathered around 30 participants including students and staff from EU-CONEXUS universities and Université Bordeaux Montaigne.
The participants received a training about peace and military service from NATO representatives, and learnt about topics, such as:
- Migration
- Refugees
- Sustainability
- Debate techniques
- Communication skills
The final debate addressed important topics in our societies, activity which allowed the students to put into practice what they have learned during the courses:
- Military Service ought to be obligatory given the current geopolitical situation
- EU migration policies should be more expansive and less restrictive
- Governs should make citizens directly responsible of local sustainability
- Cultural products are meant to be free for students from 12 to 25 years old
Congratulations to our students, Alexia Radu and Alexia Codoi for representing us at this event!
Student Civic Engagement is an Erasmus Plus project coordinated by the University of La Rochelle and supported by Erasmus Plus funds from France. The project aims to develop the civic involvement of students and their civic skills, as well as training them and university teaching staff to implement debates. It was launched in March 2021 and up to this moment other two events have taken place – the meeting of the project team in France and a training in Klaipeda, for students and teaching staff, where each university learned details about the debate and is going to implement each one (7 partners). Another important activity is the development of regulations, documents to encourage, at the institution level, the involvement of students in civic activities.
